Malaysians’ Love-Hate Relationship with Solo Travel

Family reunions, weddings, romantic gateway; travel has long been considered a group activity. But travel trends are changing! In recent years, more people have embraced solo travel to satisfy desire for alone time.

To investigate this growing phenomenon, Klook found out that the vast majority of travelers are interested in hitting the road alone—regardless of age, gender or nationality.

▲ Statistics from Klook’s global solo traveler 2019 survery.

Can you believe that 69% of Malaysians ourselves have had their fair share of solo travel or considering to have one?

74% of Generation Z (18 to 24-year-olds) respondents and 67% of Millennial (25 to 39-year-olds) respondents said they have already traveled along and would keen to plan a trip.

Shocking isn’t it? We expect that the younger traveler would be more adventurous, instead Klook’s data revealed otherwise! Additionally, there is also a slight difference between genders, where men are seen to be more interested in solo travel compared to women—with percentage of 73% and 66% respectively.

▲ Statistics on Malaysians’ top things to do while solo travel.

But even with all these statistics, why is solo travel is still a subject of foreign matter? Apparently, despite the high percentage of interest in traveling alone, there are few hurdles that hold back solo travelers.

▲ While Malaysians voted safety as the main concern, ‘fear of loneliness’ ranks as the top concern of global solo travelers.

Of course, not everyone is ready to explore alone. Many people have a love-hate relationship with solo travel as they are interested in hitting the road alone, but simultaneously fear of potentially feeling lonely. This concern was prevalent across all generations, with Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X as well as Baby Boomers.
